Managing Fish Translocation and Stocking in the Murray-Darling Basin

Date: 25-26 September 2002
Venue: Canberra , Australian Capital Territory , Australia

 Summary
A workshop titled Managing Fish Translocation and Stocking in the Murray-Darling Basin was held in Canberra on 25-26 September 2002. Hosted by WWF Australia and Inland Rivers Network, with financial support from MDBC, New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Queensland DPI, the workshop involved discussion and presentations on issues of fish translocation and stocking from 40 participants from a diversity of sectors.

The participants acknowledged the importance of stocking and translocation as a potential management tool, as well as the inherent dangers and need to conduct these activities in an ecologically-sustainable manner. While the progress made by each jurisdiction to address issues identified during the workshop was acknowledged, participants identified the lack of coordination and scientific input into management, inadequate resourcing, and poor community consultation and education as barriers to effective management of translocation and stocking issues.

The MDBC, in partnership with other agencies, has undertaken to address these recommendations where feasible, with significant steps already taken to incorporate the emergent issues into the NFS during its draft phase.

The workshop produced a list of recommendations detailed in the proceedings :contact WWF Australia http://wwf.org.au to obtain a copy or download Fish Workshop Proceedings 2002 [PDF 1Mb]
