Managing the Risks

Management of the risks occurs within the context of the policy, legislative and regulatory regimes of the Australian Government and the five states/territories that have jurisdiction over the MDB, as well as Inter-Governmental Agreements such as the Murray-Darling Basin Agreement and the National Water Initiative.

The State and Territory jurisdictions have direct management responsibility for many of the risks. They have in place a range of regulatory measures that are used to control both the occurrence and impact of the risks, and use these measures, as necessary, to manage the risks in areas considered to be a high priority.

Wherever possible, actions to manage the risks to shared water resources will be designed to work with and build on these existing frameworks and management arrangements.
