Privacy Statement

Thank you for visiting the Murray-Darling Basin Commission’s website and for reading our privacy statement.

Our policy is to respect and protect the privacy of our users. This statement outlines how we collect and use information through this site.

This site does now use ‘cookies’ to record information about your visit. Except as detailed below, when you visit our site we do not collect personal information which may reveal or imply your identity. You can visit our site without telling us who you are, unless you choose to give us this information.

Cookies
MDBC uses "cookies" when you visit our site. Cookies are small pieces of information which can be stored on your hard drive (persistent cookies) or in memory (session cookies). They can record information about your visit to the site, allowing it to remember you next time you visit and provide a more meaningful experience.

We use cookies to offer you increased security. Despite common myths, the cookies we send to your PC cannot read your hard drive, obtain any information from your browser or command your computer to perform any action. They are designed so that they cannot be sent to another site or be retrieved by any site other than MDBC.

We use two types of cookies:

Persistent cookies - identify pages accessed and provide personalised features, for example reissuing your selected bandwidth version from your previous visit. They are used to help us develop the design and layout of the web site, improve applications, and measure their effectiveness.

Session cookies - is used for maintaining contact with a user through a session and allows MDBC to recognise you as an individual as you move from one page to another. At the end of your session, you may leave this site to go to another web site, or you may close your browser. When you do this the cookie is immediately deleted. If you do not finish or close your session (ie stay logged on), the web site will automatically log you off after about 20 minutes. The cookie stored within your browser will expire when you close your web browser.

We do collect some information when you visit this site, but this will not identify you. It is sometimes called ‘clickstream data’ and consists of information automatically collected and logged such as:

  • your country, state and organisation type
  • your computer’s operating system (ie Windows, Mac etc)
  • the date and time of your visit
  • the pages that you access and the documents you download
  • the path taken to the MDBC site (eg: through a search engine or link at another site) and
  • the type of browser you use.

We use this information to help improve our site and to make it more useful to visitors. We create a statistical summary which tells us the number of visitors to different pages of our site as well as what parts are most and least visited.

Anonymity
The Commission will not attempt to identify users or their browsing activities except in the unlikely event of an investigation, where a law enforcement agency may exercise a warrant or subpoena to access information.
