Drought Update: May

Rainfall during autumn has been below average and flows of water into the Murray system during March and April remained extremely low. Looking at past records indicates that after a dry autumn, inflows of water into the river system will remain low during winter and spring.

Living River Launch

It was all happening in Burrumbuttock on Thursday 15 May! The ‘Living River’ education project was launched at Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre during which a new native fish tank was unveiled and attendees got a sneak peek at a new DVD all about the Murray River. Also on view was a web resource book and poster.

The volume of water that is! Pumps have started moving water from Lake Alexandrina to the Lower Lakes to prevent them from becoming acidic. On 2 May, water began flowing into Lake Albert, which is hoped will reduce the risk of environmental damage.

Ever seen a Regent Parrot, a Musk Lorikeet or a Blue Bonnet? Well, you might find them in a new book or poster for identifying parrots of the mallee region. These publications are a colourful introduction to most parrot species found in south-east Australian mallee habitats.

Wines and wetlands

A winery’s wetland will be getting a top-up of water. The partial refilling of the wetland area at Banrock Station winery will help prevent what could be irreversible damage from increasing salinity and will also be critical in saving plant and animal habitat.

World Environment Day

It’s happening on 5 June 2008! This year’s theme and title is "Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy", which is all about reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere. As carbon dioxide gas is a greenhouse gas, contributing to global warming and linked to climate change, the aim of this year’s World Environment Day is to find ways to reduce the production of carbon dioxide gases.
