The 2005 Queensland Southern Freshwater Fisheries workshop, held in Stanthorpe for two days after the NFS Workshop, was co-hosted by the DPI&F and the Stanthorpe Bluewater Fishing and Restocking Club Inc. Approximately 105 delegates represented freshwater fish stocking associations, freshwater hatcheries, recreational fishing bodies, regional NRM groups and the DPI&F. These workshops are held to foster feedback from community-based stocking associations involved in the Queensland Government’s Freshwater Fish Stocking Program.

This year’s workshop was both an avenue for the exchange of new information and ideas, and feedback from delegates, and also an opportunity for members of the local stocking association to get involved in the workshop. This workshop, held in the Queensland Murray-Darling, presented an opportunity to increase awareness of the NFS implementation plans, and gave the regional NRM groups the opportunity to interact with a new group of stakeholders.

DPI&F reported on progress with an Ecological Sustainable Development (ESD) assessment of Queensland fish stocking program. Stocking groups are supportive of the approach and recognise that stocking must be undertaken under appropriate sustainability guidelines.

2004–05 projects and activities DPI&F has commenced the development of a position paper on fish stocking and translocation in Queensland. This will document all historic stockings and translocations and all current policies and procedures. This is the first step in an ESD assessment for stocking and translocation in Queensland.

The Freshwater Management Advisory Committee (FMAC) is the DPI&F consultative group of freshwater fisheries management in Queensland. Its Stocking and Translocation Subcommittee provide advice on stocking and translocation requests and on policy direction. FMAC and the subcommittee are involved in the development of the Stocking and Translocation position paper.

The Sub-committee met on 9 December 2004 to consider a new stocking application for Undulla Creek (in the Condamine Basin). The Tara Fish Restocking Association Inc applied to stock Murray-Darling strain Golden perch, Silver perch and Murray cod. All three species are permitted to be stocked into private waters within the Condamine Basin under schedule 6 of the Fisheries (Freshwater) Management Plan 1999, therefore a stocking management plan was developed and signed off in conjunction with a DPI&F regional fisheries officer. The Sub-committee supported the stocking application and DPI&F subsequently issued a permit.
